Kibale National Park, Chimps Tour & Habituation
Kibale forest national park is well-known for protecting the intelligent, gentle, shy and human close relative known as chimpanzees which is one of the most amazing apes in Africa. The Kibale Fort Portal area is one of Uganda’s most rewarding destinations to explore. The park lies close to the tranquil Ndali-Kasenda crater area and within 2 to 3 hours drive of the Queen Elizabeth, Rwenzori Mountains and Semuliki National Parks, as well as the Toro-Semuliki Wildlife Reserve.
The park also hosts other creatures like Baboons, Butterflies, bird species, Red-tailed Monkeys, Baboons and Grey-cheeked, Mangabeys and so many others. Chimpanzee tracking is the major activities at the park however, it is not as strenuous as gorilla trekking. Tracking chimps in Kibale forest need a small walk as visitors need few hours to encounter them. There are 2 schedules for chimps tracking, the morning schedule and afternoon schedule. A maximum of 8 persons are allowed to track chimps for every session, that is to say, 8 pax in the morning, and 8 pax in the afternoon. The chimpanzees tend to keep a safe distance in the tall trees, chomping on fruit and defecating at will, but it’s still a fascinating experience.
There is also Chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale forest. Here you spend the whole day with chimps, studying their behavior. Chimpanzee habituation starts early by 6am before chimps get out of their nests, up to 6pm or 7pm when chimps get back to their nests. A full day with chimpanzees is an adventure experience for life time.
Among the accommodation options in and around Kibale National park include Kyaninga lodge, Ndali lodge, Kibale forest lodge, Primate Lodge Kibale, Chimp Nest Lodge, Chimpanzee guest house and many other hotels around Fort Portal town.
